CHANNEL TUNNEL
The Channel Tunnel is a railway tunnel that runs beneath the English Channel, connecting southern England with northern France. It is a modern-day wonder of engineering and technology.
Although the idea of an undersea tunnel was first brought up as early as 1751, construction of the Channel Tunnel didn't begin until 1988. Tunneling operations were conducted simultaneously from both ends, using eleven gigantic tunnel boring machine. On average, a tunneling rate was 426 m a week. 13,000 workers and engineers were involved in this unprecedented project.
On 6 May 1994, the tunnel was inaugurated by Queen Elizabeth II and French President François Mitterrand in a ceremony held in Calais. Regular commercial services began in December 1994. The Channel Tunnel is 50.45 km long; 37.9 km of this are undersea. On average, the tunnel runs 50 m below the seabed. At its lowest point, it is 75 m deep below the seabed, and 115 m below sea level.
The Channel Tunnel is not a single tunnel. It actually consists of three parallel tunnels: two 7.6-m diameter rail tunnels and a 4.8-m diameter service tunnel. Single-track rail lines are laid down in each of the running tunnels. Normally, the northern tunnel carries trains from Britain to France and the southern one carries trains in the opposite direction. If one of the running tunnels is closed down for maintenance, the other is used for train movement in both directions.
A service tunnel lies between the two train tunnels. There is a roadway inside it. This tunnel is designed for maintenance workers to access the tunnel complex and provides a safe route for escape during emergencies. Cross-passages link the rail tunnels to the service one at 375-metre spacing. There are also two crossovers where trains can change tunnels if they need to.
A – rail tunnels
B –a service tunnel
С – cross-passages
D - a piston relief duct
The tunnel carries three types of trains:
• high-speed Eurostar passenger trains running from London to Paris and Brussels;
• Eurotunnel Shuttles carrying road vehicles;
• international freight trains carrying both conventional rail freight and containerized freight between Great Britain and the Continent.
Up to 400 trains pass through the tunnel each day, carrying an average of 50,000 passengers, 6,000 automobiles, 180 buses and 54,000 tonnes of freight.
Although safety is a top priority for Eurotunnel, there have been three fires that were significant enough to close the tunnel, as well as other incidents. For example, on 18 December 2009, over 2000 passengers were trapped in the tunnel for approximately 16 hours as the power supply system failed due to the cold weather and snow. On 7 January 2010, a Brussels-London Eurostar broke down in the tunnel. There were 236 passengers aboard. The train had to be towed to Ashford; other trains that had not yet reached the tunnel were turned back. The electrical supply problem in the train tunnel blocked traffic between Britain and destinations on the continent on 18 October 2016.
