Alfred Nobel
1. Alfred Nobel is a greatest Swedish scientist and inventor. World-famous for his works he was never personally known during his life. However, since his death, his name has brought fame and glory to many outstanding people.
2. Alfred Nobel was born in Stockholm on October 21, 1833. His father was an industrialist; Emmanuel Nobel had his own laboratory, where he studied explosive materials. (1) He was the inventor of a land-mine. (2)
3. Nobel is known as a man of many contrasts. He never studied at school (he only took private lessons), but he became a skillful chemist and a brilliant linguist having mastered five foreign languages. (3)
4. Alfred was born in a poor family but became a millionaire. He was a scientist who liked literature an industrialist who remained an idealist. He made a fortune (4) but lived a simple life. A lover of mankind Nobel never had a family to love him. A patriotic son of his native land he died alone in Italy. He invented a dynamite to improve the peacetime industries of mining and road building, but people began to use it as weapon of war. Being imaginative and inventive Alfred Nobel had luck in business; he built up over 80 companies in 20 different countries.
5. In his famous will he left money to provide prizes for outstanding works in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature, economics and promotion (5) of peace between nations. Since Nobel’s death many outstanding scientists, writers and public figures from different countries have become Nobel Prize Winners. (6)

London
1. London is the capital of Great Britain, its political, economic and commercial centre. It is a great industrial and cultural centre. Today London is one of the largest cities in the world and the biggest seaport in Europe.
2. London is a very old city. It is more than twenty centuries old. Its population is about ten million people. London lies on both sides of the River Thames. The Thames is a very beautiful and wide river. The river Thames flows from west to east and divides London into two parts: the North Bank and the South Bank. London stretches for nearly thirty miles from north to south and for nearly thirty miles from east to west.
3. The Important parts of London are the City, the West End, and the East End. The City is a financial and business part of London. There are most of London banks, offices and firms there. It is a very small part of London, only one square mile and the number of people who live there is only about ten thousand.
4. The West End is the richest and the most beautiful part of London. There are fine mansions, theatres, museums, big shops, hotels, restaurants, schools, colleges and the University. Its streets and parks are the finest in the capital. The East End of London includes the port, docks and factories. The working people live in this part of London.
5. Thus we may say that the City is the money of London, the West End is the goods of London, and the East End is the hands of London, those hands which built the banks of the city, palaces, hotels, theatres, rich houses and department stores in the West End.

The places of interest in London:
St. Pauls Cathedral - Собор Святого Павла
the Houses of Parliament - Парламент
Westminster Abbey - Вестминстерское Аббатство
Tower Bridge - Тауэрский мост
Hyde Park - Гайд парк
Trafalgar Square - Трафальгарская площадь
Big Ben - Биг Бэн
National Gallery - Национальная галерея
