THE POLITICAL SYSTEM OF GREAT BRITAIN
The UK is a parliamentary monarchy. The head of the state is a king or a queen. Royal power is for life and is inherited by law. Monarchy in Britain was broken only once in the 17th century by Oliver Cromwell. The present monarch of the UK is Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, II. She was born in 1925 and crowned in Westminster Abbey in London in 1953.
The Queen and her husband Prince Philip have four children: Charles, Ann, Andrew and Edward. The royal family lives in Buckingham Palace in London. There are three branches of state power in the UK: legislative, executive and judicial. The highest organ of legislative power is Parliament which resides in Westminster Palace and consists of the Queen, the House of Lords and the House of Commons. The main function of Parliament is making laws of the country. The members of each House meet in session which begins in the end of October and lasts for about 160 days.
