THE PECULIARITY OF INTERCULTURAL LANGUAGE INTERACTION (ON THE MATERIAL OF RUSSIAN, ENGLISH AND FRENCH PHRASEOLOGICAL UNITS)

The relevance of this study is explained by the increasing importance of intercultural communication in the modern world and the need to understand the cultural and linguistic characteristics of other countries.

The purpose of the study: to identify the features of intercultural language interaction by analyzing the correspondence of proverbs and phraseological units in Russian, English and French.

Different languages in the course of their historical development constantly interact with each other and have a mutual influence. "Constantly replenished with new units, the phraseological composition reflects the cultural and historical experience of the people, as well as the peculiarities of the historical laws of this language development" [1, p. 560].

In the scientific literature, a phraseological unit is defined as "a common name of semantically related word and sentence combinations, which, unlike syntactic structures similar to them in form, are not produced in accordance with the general choice and word combination patterns and in the utterance organization, but are reproduced in speech in a fixed ratio of semantic structure and a certain lexical and grammatical composition" [1, pp. 559-560].

A proverb is understood as "a phraseological unit that has a sentence structure with the semantics of universality, expresses a recommendation (advice, moralizing or prohibition) and/or explains the state of affairs under discussion" [2, p. 736].

Having analyzed the definitions above, we found that these two concepts have a lot in common, but, nevertheless, differ from each other. Thus, a proverb is a short, complete saying that has no imagery and contains an edifying meaning. At the same time, proverbs can be changed neither lexically nor grammatically. Phraseological unit is also a fixed semantically related utterance, but, in contrast to a proverb, it contains the concept of imagery and is not complete. The phraseological unit can also be changed grammatically.

Within this study, 15 Russian proverbs (see Table 1) and phraseological units (see Table 2) and their English and French equivalents were selected from the National Corpus of the Russian language [3]. Further on, the analysis of their meaning correspondence and lexical content was conducted.

French

Si tu veux du beurre, il en faut battre

To fly off the handle

French

Le monde est petit

Être aux anges

Sortir de ses gonds

Let's analyze the phraseological correspondence on the example of Table No. 2. In the case with a complete correspondence between Russian, English and French versions of the same phraseological unit, both the lexical composition of expressions (мир – world – monde; тесен – small – petit) and their imagery coincide, whereas in the case with partial correspondence, the only parameter that coincides is imagery (in all variants, the phraseological units conjure up an image of something bright and beautiful, despite the fact that different vocabulary is used). In the case with zero correspondence of phraseological units, neither the lexical composition of the expressions nor their imagery coincides.

Thus, we have found a close interaction and mutual influence of different languages and cultures, which manifested itself in the meaning similarity of phraseological units and the presence of their equivalents in different languages.

We believe that understanding such a sphere of a language as phraseology is an essential skill for translators and interpreters, since it facilitates the process of intercultural communication by understanding the cultural and linguistic characteristics of the countries of the languages studied.
