Train Dispatcher
In order to simplify the problem of running trains, all railroads are divided into divisions. A division may be of different length. Each division is operated as a small railroad. A division superintendent is responsible for train movement. At every railway division there is always a train dispatcher, who is responsible for train movement too. There are two kinds of trains: regular and extra ones. A regular train is a train running according to time-table. From every station a train dispatcher receives reports of passing trains. He knows at any time the location of every train on his division. When a train becomes late, or when an extra train is started, it is his business to give the orders which will permit the trains to pass over his division with as little delay as possible.
Nowadays radio plays an important role in railway operation.
Radio reduces the number of train stops, cuts delays of all trains and provides the safety of train operation. The dispatcher can see where trains are on his diagram, but he often doesn't know why a train is in a particular section for a long time and how long it will be there. But with radio, the dispatcher can call the operator of the wayside station nearest to the train and ask him to call the train to find out the reason of the train's delay at the next station.
The dispatcher directs the movement of trains. His work requires quick acting, and above all absolute accuracy. The slightest mistake on the part of the dispatcher may cause a terrible accident.
Each dispatcher makes a complete record of the movement of the trains on his division. He must keep traffic movement freely. He provides the best possible utilization of locomotive and train crews, the running of special trains. Train control is carried out from special offices which are equipped with different devices.
Dispatcher's working place is provided with a special control console by which the control can be secured. The console is equipped with rows of keys, a pedal control, a calling key, a desk electric clock, a micro-phone, a dispatcher telephone, a signal lamp and lighting schemes. With their help the dispatcher can communicate with other offices, the telegraph-operator, signal boxes and sidings on his section and without delay decide the necessary order of trains running.
