The article "Flying hurts the planet but it's vital for island tourism. Is there a greener way?" was published in The Guardian by Dr Susanne Becken on the 15th of December in 2023.
The key idea underlying the article is the environmental damage caused by frequent flights.
The author provides a detailed analysis of the situation and shows the relevance of aviation for island states and tourism in general, however it brings significant damage to the environment. This is a rather complex puzzle, as abandoning the use of fossil fuels is not possible at the moment due to the fact that this is the crucial element of flight. Cancellation of flights is unfeasible too since the regions are remote and there is no way to get there by other transport. Many experts are looking for a solution to this problem and one of them is the use of electric aircraft for travelling short distances. On the other hand, as this method is energy intensive, the production of electricity from renewable sources should be increased.
Now the main goal is to increase the value of tourism without a large number of | travellers. This goal implies "sorting out" or categorising tourists who can bring more benefits and other matters. Although, investment in tourism makes this much more challenging.
Summarising the article, the author emphasised the dangers of aviation providing research to prove it. However, the question remained as to what alternatives of transport could be effective over long distances. In conclusion, I would like to say that aviation does have an essential part not only in tourism, but also in travelling long distances quickly for other purposes. Although, it is obvious that it causes enormous damage to nature and leads to global warming, but I don't see a solution to this problem. Perhaps we should look at other aspects to come to a balance.
