"Gladiator" was directed by Ridley Scott in 2000. This film is a historical drama about the great Roman Empire during the war with German tribes, that are defeated by an army of Romans led by the famous general Maximus.
The main character is Maximus Decimus Meridius portrayed by Russel Krowe. Maximus is an experienced, intrepid and battle-hardened warrior who is ready to fight for the glory of Rome and the Emperor Marcus Aurelius portrayed by Richard Harris, who treats Maximus as his own son. This attitude really hurts Marcus’ son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) who murders his father due to succeed him and murders Maximus’ family. Obsessed with a thirst for revenge, the General becomes a gladiator and makes his way to the Colosseum to kill the new Emperor.
"Gladiator" shows that all characters have their own dramas and it's different for everyone. As for Maximus, after his forced exile his meaning of life is to take revenge for his murdered relatives. Emperor Marcus Aurelius is faced with a difficult choice of who to give Rome after his death, Commodus seeks recognition from his father and the people of Rome, and Lucilla fears for her son, because he is one of the heirs to the throne.
From my point of view, the cast and props are superb. I am really impressed by Russel Krowe’s and Joaquin Phoenix’s acting. In addition, very realistic fight scenes, costumes and props in general give a powerful entourage to the film. It is as if you are transported along with the characters into this atmosphere while watching this film.
In summary, I would like to say that the film is really worth watching in spite of the fact that historical films are dull for me. The director managed to show the spirit of that time, the time of the great empire of Rome in this film. All the beautiful things that made Rome great fall under the greed, cruelty, ignorance of people. And in this chaos, there will always be those who will bring light and hope to people. "Gladiator" is a film worthy of all its awards and nominations and shows the culture of the Roman Empire in all its glory.
