The argumentative essay: General Guidelines
The argumentative essay is a genre of writing that requires the student to investigate a topic; collect, generate, and evaluate evidence; and establish a position on the topic in a concise manner.
Definition: This academic essay will require you to present an argument through reasoning and the use of evidence. You will need to respond to the assigned question by thinking, reading and writing your way to a thesis statement (a considered position/stance).
The thesis statement is expressed as one or two sentences in the introductory paragraph of your essay. It is supported in the essay body by a series of topic sentences, one in each paragraph. Each topic sentence is in tu
supported by evidence and examples from your readings and research, reflection, observation and analysis.
Your essay should connect your thesis statement and your topic sentences (the major points you make to support the thesis statement). It should also connect the topic sentences with the evidence and examples you use to develop and illustrate them.
Please note: Some confusion may occur between the argumentative essay (ArgEss) and the expository essay (ExpEss) These two genres are similar, but the ArgEss differs from the ExpEss in the amount of pre-writing (invention) and research involved. The ArgEss is commonly assigned as a capstone or final project in a semester and involves detailed research. Expository essays involve less research and are shorter in length. Expository essays are often used for in-class writing exercises or tests.
Argumentative essay assignments generally call for extensive research of literature or previously published material. Argumentative assignments may also require empirical research where the student collects data through interviews, surveys, observations, or experiments. Detailed research allows the student to lea
about the topic and to understand different points of view regarding the topic so that she/he may choose a position and support it with the evidence collected during research.
