I. Answer the following questions:

1. What is the notion of polysemy?

2. What factors account for the spread of polysemy in English?

3. What is a lexico-semantic variant?

4. Which words do we call homonyms? What is the traditional classification of homonyms?

5. What are the sources of homonyms? What is the essential difference between homonymy and polysemy? What do they have in common? Illustrate your answer with examples.

6. What are synonyms and what are their most important characteristics?

7. What is the notion of "synonymic row"? Which of the synonyms usually serves as a semantically dominant component?

8. What are the most significant sources of synonymy in English?

9. Which words do we usually classify as antonyms? Give your own examples of such words.

10. To which parts of speech do most antonyms belong? How do you account for this?

II. Do the foloowing exercises:

1. Try your hand at being a lexicographer. Write simple definitions to illustrate as many meanings as possible for the following polysemantic words. After you have done it, check your results using a dictionary.

Face, heart, nose, smart, to lose.

2. Find the homophones to the following words, translate them into Russian and explain their meanings in English:

Heir, dye, cent, tale, sea, week, peace, sun, meat, steel, knight, sum, coarse, write, sight, hare.

3. Find linguistic jokes which are based on the use of homonyms. Explain the usage.

4. Continue the synonymic row for the following words:

To shine, to look, to surprise, strange, to walk, to smell, to think, to make, angry, to cry, to laugh.

5. Find antonyms for the following words:

Good, deep, narrow, clever, young, to love, to reject, to give, strong, to laugh, joy, evil, up, slowly, black, sad, to die, to open, clean, darkness, big.

III. Put down key words and make a Glossary of the new terms.

IV. Make and send the presentation on the theme of Lecture V.
