Dataset -ISSP – 2018 religion.sav.
Each dataset has a codebook associated with it. Use codebooks to understand what different variable names mean.
Some survey datafiles could be too big for everything to work properly. If you RStudio is behaving in a weird manner, just choose several countries and try running your analysis with them only.
You should start by formulating a research question. The latter outlines a puzzle, something curious, that you could explore using survey data. We’ll talk more about formulating research questions during a different course next semester. Some examples:
• Does digital inequality affect political knowledge?
• What individual level factors affect attitudes to migrants?
• Are happier people more likely to trust others?
Try to come up with something similar but for different variables. Your question should be about a relationship between two variables.
You are not allowed to use the default view of ggplot charts. Makes them as nice looking as you can.
Plan of the report
- Write down your research question at the top of RMD file. For our task, research question should be about a relationship between two variables. In a couple of sentences, explain why you are expecting to find a relationship between them. No need to cite academic literature. Just write something coherent. (1 point) - Visualize the distribution of the two key variables (tip: use histograms or bar charts). Are there some unusual patterns in your data? Comment on the plots under the code chunk. (2 points)
- Compare how members of at least one sociodemographic group differ from each other in terms
of their answers to the two key variables from the research question. Interpret the comparison
under the code chunk. (2 points)
Examples of sociodemographic groups:
• men/women
• people with different levels of education
• people living in rural / urban areas
• higher / lower income
- Visualize the relationship between the key variables from your research question. Interpret
the relationship under the code chunk. Make sure that there are labels for axis ticks (i.e. smth
other than numbers). Check this article on ggplot to understand what I mean by “axis ticks”.
Disagreement (lower values) should be located in the left (lower) part of an axis, while agreement (higher values) should be located in the right (upper) part of an axis (3 points)
- Does this relationship differ between countries? Choose 2-3 countries. Check if the relationship
that you found before is the same in all these countries. Interpret the comparison under the
code chunk. (2 points)
