Tanker Truck (Water Tender)
A tanker truck, which can also be known as a water tender or water bowser,
is a specialist fire appliance with the primary purpose of transporting large
amounts of water to the fireground to make it available for extinguishing

operations. These are especially useful in rural areas where fire hydrants are not
readily available.
Most tankers have an on-board pumping system. This pump is often not of
sufficient power to fight fires (as it is designed to be attached to a fire engine), but
is more often used to draw water into the tender from hydrants or otherwater
sources. In some areas, the tenders are used to pump water during floods, and may
be fitted with a heavier duty pump for this purpose.
Water tenders can be used also in chemical accidents, to clean highways after
collisions, or pump water in floods. Some water tenders carry firefighting
equipment and crew resembling more an engine. These water tenders are able to
operate relatively independently. As the most ultimate solutions some water
tenders really combine a fire engine and water tender. This kind of unit may have
seats for up to six firefighters, a water tank of more than 3000 gallons (approx. 11
000 L), and basic equipment for firefighting and rescue.
Very light water tenders are sometimes used in wildfires. For example, a
small tank of 265 gallons (1000 L) has been carried by a cross-country vehicle
to extinguish smoldering stubs on rough terrain.
Some tenders carry also foaming agents, and extinguishing powders or gases.
Sometimes these materials are carried in larger amounts on very specialized,
separate units like hose trucks, powder trucks, carbon dioxide extinguishing
trucks etc. Specialized Airport Crash Tenders are used at airports to carry larger
amounts of water and foaming agents.
In some fire departments, a function of a water tender may be performed
by a hose layer, which carries large-capacity high-pressure hose wagons to
incidents where hydrants or other water sources are not close enough to the
fireground. It will lay out its hose at the nearest hydrant or water source, then drive
to the fireground with the hose laying off the back; upon arrival it will connect to
a fire appliance to supply it with the water needed for the firefighting operations.
