Team project – Qualitative/Quantitative Research of reasons affecting choice of CBM&As
and IJVs in various industries (OIL&GAS -our industry)
Goal – to identify reasons that have affected choice of cross border mergers and acquisitions and
international joint ventures.
Format – assignment to be prepared in teams of seven students max.
Identify the title of research:
Example: Reasons influencing choice of CBM&As and IJVs by oil and gas companies in
developing countries;
It is possible to narrow down to specific countries in industry only if there are more than 1 000
deals to be analyzed in Zephyr.
Structure of analysis:
Review scientific articles on reasons affecting choice of internationalization strategy (start from
general view of all potential reasons, then narrow it down to industry-specific ones); I do not
recommend using consulting reports. Try to find appropriate scientific articles from JSTOR, Web
of Science or Scopus.
Qualitative research of reasons from Zephyr (analyze deal rationale, find out the most common
reasons mentioned in this column through counting specific words) – available extracts will be
provided;
Compare the reasons from scientific articles and your own research. Make conclusions and
explain your findings and provide possible explanations if there are discrepancies between
reasons mentioned in scientific articles and your own research.
Form of project submission:
Presentations (10 min in class + Q&A session, number of slides should be reasonable);
Essays from 3 to 5 pages (450 words per page). Use Times New Roman font size 14 and
APA style for references in text and bibliography (especially for citation of scientific
articles).
Deadlines:
Presentations (to be sent before the midnight from Friday to Saturday, December 2);
Essays (to be sent before the midnight from Saturday to Sunday, December 3).
Each team has to submit one group presentation and one group essay.
Since this is a team assignment, students will have to provide peer evaluation and independently
evaluate teammates (to be conducted anonymously, marks from 1 to 10 should be given to each
team member). It will affect individual mark of each student, derived from total mark that team will
receive for the project! Example: total mark of the team for project is 8 – there are five members
in the team and four members have evaluated one student as 5 out of 10, then this student will
receive final individual mark for team project as 4. This is done to weed out free-riders in the team
