K. Jasper’s thesis concerning an “Axial age” contends that there was a universal revolution in
human thought from China to Greece between 800-200 b.c.e.. However, some thinkers (such as
Peter Watson) believe that Greek thought, or Israelite thought (for example: Y.Kaufmann), were
still different from so-called Axial thought, and thus unique or special. What arguments can be
brought for and against Israelite/Greek uniqueness (choose one) versus “general axial change”?
