Write a reflective essay entitled ‘The place of memory in ICC
First of all, choose one of the following areas to explore – the music, dance, food or traditional clothing of your country. (Music and dance can be done together if you find it appropriate because they interrelate)
Explore and write about the part this aspect of culture plays in the daily life of your country and how it is related to memory
In order to construct your essay, consider the following questions
1) What is your earliest memory of X (X being music, dance, food or clothing) in your country
2) What is your most significant/ interesting memory of X
3) Older members of your family or community remember what aspects of X? (Interview them if possible.) How do their memories differ from yours
4) What are some key differences between X in your country, region or group and the X in another nearby country, region or group
5) What aspect of X in your country (region) is linked to X in another country (region)
6What aspect of X in your country could be an example of ‘cultural hybridity
7) Is your country proud of X and why? How do other countries see it
8) Will the X in your country still be as well known in 10 or 20 years? Was it well known 50 years ago
9) What is the importance of memory in ICC? How is this aspect of your culture remembered? Who ‘writes’ the memories and are there memories which are omitted or forgotten
10) How is cultural memory linked to the past, the present and the future

Remember to have at least three references listed at the end of your essay and cited in the body of your essay. You may use any of the sources in your ICC student handbook. Also, you may cite any of the weekly Powerpoints of the lecturers, particularly Graham’s on Cultural Memory and any associated ICC theories.
