Consumer Theory
1. From individual to market demand. In Gas Pump, South Dakota, there are
two kinds of consumers, Buick owners and Ford owners. Every Buick owner has the
following demand function for gasoline:
20 − 5P if P ≤ 4
DB(P) =
0 if P > 4
Every Ford owner has the following demand function
15 − 3P if P ≤ 5
DF (P ) =
0 if P > 5
Quantities are measured in gallons per week and price is measured in dollars. Sup- pose that Gas Pump has 150 consumers, 100 Buick owners, and 50 Ford owners.
(a) On the same graph draw the demand curve representing the total demand by Buick owners, demand curve representing total demand by Ford owners and the market demand curve for the whole town. At what prices does the market demand curve have kinks?
(b) Write down the formula describing the market demand.
(c) Find price elasticity of demand if price is 1$, 4.50$, 10$ per gallon.
(d) Let price be 2$ per gallon. Find consumer surplus of every Buick owner, Ford owner. Find total consumer surplus by summing up all consumers’ surpluses.
