What is important and could possibly provide you some guidance, is that you select the reading you would like to write your response paper, and then you don't summarize it or repeat it, but try to develop your own thoughts about the argument the paper presents. I understand that possibly this could be a challenging exercise, but it is in order to somehow "overcome" the passive reading, and learn how to take a stance, and argue convincingly. You can think it as a conversation, and you are presented with argument "x" and you have to reply.
